Numnuts

Our assignment is to take photos in unusual light.  We then have to edit the image so the colours go back to normal. I figured my son’s lava lamp should work well.

The blue screen of the tv when in DVD mode also created a cool effect.

What smartypants forgot is that blue and green are primary colours.  They don’t have any other colour info!!!  I just get various shades of blue and green.  So back to the drawing board.  Late night tonight

The colour of early morning

Our latest assignment was to try to capture the colour and feeling of early morning.  So everyone had sheets of cellophane hanging on c-stands to create coloured light.  My props were quite heavy to carry through the city, but I think it was worth it in the end.  I had a lot of fun and definitely learnt a few new techniques.

The first one is with blue and yellow light, the blue adding to the shadows and the yellow to the highlights.

Then we tried some red and blue

I couldn’t resist trying some gold and magenta light on this little girl set up.

Have you noticed some of the colours the light creates early in the morning?  It is amazing how the light’s colour can affect our mood.

Weekend Workshop

This weekend was our class workshop, so the days were long, but filled with information.  On the first day we went to Selby, learning to use natural light (and any other available light).  By the end I had a ton of fun, learning so much!

Sunday was a first for me, using studio lighting.  We had to model for each other.  I was blessed to get a gorgeous classmate!

A Beautiful Day

Today is such a beautiful day.  Firstly I wasn’t woken by squawking Corellas!

The morning started a little cool, but with no wind and no clouds, it has become a bright and gorgeous day.  I just had to try and share how the day feels here in Melbourne.

My youngest just had to start the morning jumping on the trampoline, the sun creating beautiful patterns on the netting. (My daughter refused to look at me while jumping though)

The light created beautiful patterns everywhere.

The afternoon has been so peaceful, just bees, butterflies and beautiful birdsong.

Days like these are glorious.  Easy to forget it is autumn already.

(For those interested, these were taken with a Canon 50mm 1.4 lens in my back garden.)

Cold mornings

For this week’s assignments, we had to make two images that use light to set a mood (any mood).  One image had to have a person as a subject, the other none.  This is my second image.

Doesn’t this image make you feel like the cold just before the sun starts heating up the earth?  That feeling early in the morning when the soil is really chilly after a cool night, the freeze running up through your feet and all you want to do is climb back in bed, curled up tight?  And just ahead you can see the sun coming with a promise of warmth, if you can just stand in it for a little while.

Well, at least I hope the images conveys something like that!  I just loved the sparseness of the image.  The shadows from the trees and the orange leaf lying so brightly amongst the few little tufts of grass.

The image was actually taken on a nice morning that turned into a 30 degree day.  I had overslept for sunrise, the sun had been up for about 15 minutes when this image was taken.

Ok, so this was lots of words, few images.  We are on our way to the aquarium, so look out for more images of that.

(PS this was also taken in Anglesea.  Everyone else was still fast asleep and thought I was really weird getting up early on a weekend away!)

Light Reading

This week’s assignment for class is to use light to create a mood.  This is one of my images so far.  It still needs a little work, so I hope I get time (and kids with a bit of patience) to reshoot it again tonight.

Marbles

I was experimenting for an assignment.  Dug out my kids’ marbles and took these photos by the window.

Playing with a flash light

Today was one of those days.  Three loads of washing on the line, just put my daughter in the car to go buy some milk, when the rain came down.  Later bumped my eye so it looks a bit like I walked into a door.  Then I came across this idea that looked safe and simple and fun.

These are my results so far.

If you will excuse me, I am going to go experiment some more!
