Old friends came past for a quick visit. One of our favourite places to take our guests is up to Grant’s Picnic Grounds in Sherbrooke Forest. It has been a while since I had been there last. Everything has been updated.
The cockatoos are as noisy and aggressive as always and the little crimson rosellas beautiful and delicate.
After all the rain, the forest was blooming with life.
We made it home before the cold and wet weather caught up to us.
My youngest had her first swimming lesson! She has been asking for a while, so we finally decided to bite the bullet and enrol her. She is loving it! (though she refuses to let me teach her now)
Her brothers aren’t that crazy about the idea because, while she’s having lessons, I make them do laps in the pool. I do let them go play in the wave pool at the end though, so it isn’t all torture for them!
My daughter had dress-up day at school recently, which, for a 5-year-old makes a perfect day! A friend had dropped off this giant teddy for her and she just had to pose in her dress-up outfit (which she changed later to be a pink ninja).
The studio nearly came down around her when she decided to toss the giant bear! But we had a fun 5 minute session regardless…
The bear is now a a shared rotation between her and her brother. They take turns sleeping with it each night. When the eldest got sick last week, he appropriated it for himself (apparently it makes a great comforting cushion!) It is back to sleeping in the younger twos’ beds.
So much has been happening in the last semester, I had to cut back on a few things so I would not get swamped. After a good break in the holidays, I am up and rearing to go on a new semester. We have been reorganising the house, changed some priorities and hopefully this semester will go smoothly. We are trying to do things more simply and spend more time with the kids. (playing hide and seek amongst other things!)

I was asked to take photos at Our Lady of Victories in Camberwell to capture the memories of an important day in the students’ lives. I arrived just after sunrise, the sun bathing the buildings in breathtaking light.
The church is a big part of the education of these children. It is a beautiful building!
I was really honoured to be able to share an important day with this school community.
Ever wonder why professional photographers make such a big deal about prints? Why do they get their knickers in a knot when you go to the local quick 10c place to print off their images? Well, here goes, lets see if I can explain it.
This image looks fine, right? The problem is, it does not print the way it looks on the screen.
When we prepare an image for printing, we decide on which paper we will use. The type of printer and the paper used have a profile. (You get a file that has the profile.) Once we have decided, we load the profile to check for colours that are out of gamut, that is, in simple terms, colours that won’t be replicated correctly on paper with the detail we see it on screen. This is called “soft proofing". The screen shot below is the soft proof for the image on Chromajet Metallic White paper. As you can see, the overall colour is slightly different to the image above. All those red bits, those are the areas that Lightroom indicates will look terrible in the print and needs to be fixed. (In Photoshop those areas are indicated in grey.)
After the fix, the file looks like this.

The difference on screen is slight, but HUGE in printing. THAT is why we take so long to get those prints to you. We want it to be perfect. And we cannot guarantee perfect at the supermarket…

I had so much fun working with this gorgeous little girl who turned one not too long ago. It is amazing to see little babies grow up before your eyes and having the honour of capturing the memories for their parents! I just loved her eyes in this photo, how she peeks over the teddy bear.
She is a real little daddy’s girl. I couldn’t help but notice how she held her daddy’s hand when they walk together and had to take a moment to take a photo of it. I suspect fathers always see their girls as being this size, no matter how old they get!
I’ll be posting more from the photo shoots soon. I have the wonderful experience of photographing some of the new catalogue for Fairy Dance. I don’t know who is going to have more fun, me or the kids!
